Looking at 2015

After an overwhelmingly busy few months, I’m finally back to updating this site.

We were so fortunate to have Dan Compton, Fran Slefer, Bryan Owens, and Nina Lane here with us on November 22nd. They played Celtic and World Music featuring guitar, fiddle, tenor banjo, mandolins, button accordion, bouzouki, clarinet and vocals. And it was a stellar concert.

The year finished out with Carl Thor and Jennifer Pratt-Walter, featuring Celtic harp, hammer dulcimer, tin whistle, recorder, vocals and piano. I was mightily surprised that so many people showed up on December 13th, when normally the holiday rush takes over. This, too, was an awesome concert.

Even though I no longer play the hammer dulcimer – and it IS for sale if you are looking for a gently used starter model – I hosted the hammer dulcimer jam at my house on January 24th. We had a good turnout and fun was had by all. This jam is open to ALL instruments if you’d ever like to join in or just come over to listen. We currently have 3 homes in which the jams take place on a rotational basis in Lake Oswego, West Linn and Portland.

***LOOKING AHEAD THIS YEAR*** – house concerts will be predominantly outdoors during the summer months. If you have suggestions of performing artists or are one yourself, please contact me. I’m looking at 1 to 2 concerts a month from approximately June – October, weather permitting.

MANY THANKS to the awesome musicians and audience members who, during our first year in 2014, helped fulfill the mission of “community through music”. We sang, clapped, danced, listened, applauded, performed, dined and laughed together. And it just doesn’t get any better than that!

Mick Doherty and Kevin Shay Johnson – 9/20/14 – Archive

On a warm, sunny afternoon, followed by a clear, starlit night, Mick Doherty and Kevin Shay Johnson graced us with their fabulous music at an outdoor concert on the back deck. It was truly a magical evening.

Brian Oberlin – 8/23/14 – Archive

Brian Oberlin played a stellar, jaw-droppingly awesome house concert last night at House Concerts in LO. Part performer, part educator and always personable, Brian answered many questions from the audience about the mandolin and his playing style which included everything from swing, traditional bluegrass and progressive bluegrass to Italian Classical Tremolo-Staccato.

If you missed the mandolin magic, Brian will play another House Concert in LO, along with Evan Marshall from LA, on Friday night, November 14th. Click on the “Upcoming Concerts” tab, in the menu bar above, for more details.

Here are a few, short clips from Brian’s performance. Forgive, once again, the amateur filming quality. You’ll just have to see Brian on stage, up close and live!

Beltaine – 8/2/14 – Archive

Beltaine – Celtic Fusion band comprised of John Keys, Brian Baker and Kris Chase – played a fabulous outdoor concert – in 90 degree weather, no less! The personable folks of Beltaine not only connect well with the audience, but foster the connection of the audience amongst itself. As the music progressed, we were clapping along or using our egg shakers (rhythm instruments). It was a most fabulous evening, in a beautiful setting. We look forward to you all coming back again!

Always a pleasure getting to perform with Beltaine!!

Hammer Dulcimer Jam 6/28/14 – archive

(Marianne’s casual writing style and less than stellar filming quality here. I’m just jotting down some memories. I don’t claim to officially speak for the group).

What a fun gathering we had here in LO! 8 hammer dulcimerists (I just made up that word), 1 guitarist and 2 flutists. A good time was had by all – and a few of us even hit a pub afterwards. And we had someone join the group who was visiting from Hawaii!!

Enjoy the video below. Please know that the emphasis is on fun, learning and camaraderie. While we aspire to play each song with clean precision, sometimes we just don’t. It’s a process and we’re always improving. We want anyone considering joining to know that this is not about perfection and that all instruments are welcome.

The next jam will be in West Linn, Saturday July 26, from 2:00-4:00pm. Contact me to get on the mailing list and/or to get directions to the venue.

Julianna Waters, Barry Crannell and Kerry Williams 6/21/14 (archive)

I am rapidly running out of superlatives to describe the amazingly fantastic musicians we’ve had here for “House Concerts in Lake Oswego”. On June 21, 2014, we had Heart and Hammer (Julianna Waters and Barry Crannell), along with Kerry Williams. They are talented, fun, personable and put on a touching, memorable performance. Do yourself a favor and come see them the next time they return. Collectively they performed with guitar(s), ukulele, mandolin, octave mandolin, clawhammer banjo and vocals.

Once again, I apologize for the less than optimal lighting and filming quality. Must work on that!!

After a potluck meal outdoors on the deck, we were treated to music and stories.

Oregon Guitar Quartet – 6/14/14 (archive)

Sometimes there is a magic of an appreciative audience and Master Classical Musicians such that the evening of performance is nothing short of a religious experience. For hours after the performance, unprompted, I kept hearing from the audience how talented the Oregon Guitar Quartet is and how they function as one very cohesive unit. We thoroughly enjoyed hearing personal stories and background information from the OGQ; almost equal to the music itself. The red carpet is rolled out and we eagerly await your return. If you think you can escape next time without staying for post-concert merriment, well… 🙂

These videos do not do the Oregon Guitar Quartet talent justice – which means, dear prospective audience, you’ll have to come see them in person!

First Hammer Dulcimer Jam in LO – May 31, 2014

Ideally, I would be filing this post under the “Hammer Dulcimer Jams” page, but alas – the editing tool on this blog requires that I file it here.

We had our first Hammer Dulcimer Jam in LO today. It has been my DREAM to have musicians over here for jams and concerts. I was so thrilled, I smiled uncontrollably throughout the first song – because it was also the only one I could play on the HD before switching over to the flute. What a stellar group of people. I loved it. The NEXT JAM is tentatively planned for June 28th, 2:00-4:00pm. Contact me with any questions.

Hammer Dulcimer Jam!

Check out the jam!

Since I can post tags only on the homepage (here), I want to draw your attention to the newly created “Hammer Dulcimer Jam” page. Let’s get together and create some fun and fab music. If you don’t play the hammer dulcimer yet, you know you want to!! Holler with any questions or comments.
