From Toronto, Ontario, Canada, via the RockyGrass Festival in Colorado, Slocan Ramblers will play an outdoor concert in LO on Friday, August 5th. Please see details of the concert and their accolades below.

The Slocan Ramblers are Canada’s young bluegrass band to watch. Rooted in tradition, fearlessly creative and possessing a bold, dynamic sound, The Slocans have quickly become a leading light of Canada’s roots music scene. With a reputation for energetic live shows, impeccable musicianship and an uncanny ability to convert anyone within earshot into a lifelong fan, The Slocans understand that if you polish up the music, you lose the raw excitement that makes it so vibrant.

On their sophomore album Coffee Creek (2015), The Slocan Ramblers blend lightning fast and devilishly intricate instrumentals with sawdust-thick vocals. In the liner notes, producer Chris Coole breaks it down: “What really impressed me while we were working on this album, was that, while they can pull off the precision and virtuosity that is at the backbone of bluegrass, they understand the power of the fragile moment in music.” On Coffee Creek, they’ve done this by staying true to the rough and rowdy roots of the music.

Coming all the way from West Virginia, Multi-Instrumentalists Sam and Joe Herrmann, also known as “Salmonjoe”, will play for House Concerts in LO. Sam and Joe will be teaching at the Annual Spring Fling Rendezvous camp for Hammer Dulcimers at Oral Hull and will then come to our house immediately afterwards to keep the good tunes going! ABOUT SAM AND JOE HERRMANN:

Since 1975, Sam and Joe have brought traditional American music to audiences throughout the United States, Canada, Ireland, and Scotland.  With fiddle, hammer dulcimer, banjo, and guitar, they tend a stable of songs from the first settlements of Appalachia to the best of contemporary American folk music.  They combine precise instrumentation, melodic interplay, and vocals to create a warm and engaging sound. Their repertoire includes songs that express a range of experience that can make you laugh or make you cry and occasionally do both at the same time, ballads that tell stories of bad men and disappointed lovers. Instrumentals that will make you want to get up and dance or sit back and listen.

Sam and Joe have played at numerous folk music venues, festivals, and concerts including Home Routes Canada, the Birchmere , the Kennedy Center, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Carter Family Fold, the Vancouver Folk Festival, Clearwater’s Hudson River Revival, and the Upper Potomac Dulcimer Festival.  They have appeared on radio shows such as Mountain Stage, Voices from the Mountains, and Live at the Birchmere, and on television shows such as Live at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, Music from Home, and the Today Show.  They have 7 CDs: Gather ’round (2008), The Dulcimer Collection (2000), Cowboys and Indians (1995), Great Dreams (1988), By and By (1985), Sweet Home (1983), and Poor Boy (1979).

Celtinalia is comprised of Carl Thor (hammer dulcimer, piano, mandolin and vocals) and Jennifer Pratt- Walter (Celtic harp, recorder, tin whistle, mountain dulcimer and vocals). This concert was very well attended last year. It is a lovely respite amidst the holiday hustle and bustle. Please make a reservation early! Details below.

Optional Potluck: 3:00-4:00pm. Please bring some finger foods/appetizers to share. We will provide wine, beer, hot chocolate and apple cider.

CONCERT: 4:00pm until approximately 6:00pm. There will be an intermission between sets to allow for the purchase of CDs, to meet the musicians, and of course, to get more food and drink. Tis the season, after all! The concert ends early enough so people can still attend holiday parties etc.

Heart and Hammer are on the heels of their new self-titled CD. Join Julianna Waters and Barry Crannell, performing as they’ve only done once before (A Barry semi-amusing comment ©. These guys are pros!). This time, it’s a 5 piece band! Julianna plays ukulele, and is responsible for 99% of the band’s material. Barry, on guitar and clawhammer banjo, is the other staple, musically, and for twisted humor. Brad Price, an exceptional Telecaster player adds a dimension and polish to the creations of J&B in addition to some contributions of his own. Donny Wright, long time bass player with Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, adds a bass line that grounds the band in time and place. Last but not least, our long time friend and crazy awesome mando picker, Kerry Williams adds color, finesse and humor when he finds the opening. Combined, they give their songs the polish and support they deserve. All dressed up and somewhere to go. Come join the party/potluck – it’s good for you. 🙂
